director of photography
I can still remember the rattling sound of my mother's 8mm, however, due to my excessive stock consumption, the camera was taken away from me, but the idea had already been placed in my head...
I finished school and college, worked as a waiter, saddler and a substitute teacher, ran a music club, drove a cab and studied history of art and visual media...
It was in 1996 when I decided to pursue this idea in my mind, rather than embark on an academic career, and I moved to London. My film school gave me the opportunity to attend the Kodak Masterclass with Vilmos Szigmond, he taught me to trust my eye and instinct, and with it, he gave me the key to cinematography.
Since then, I have had the opportunity to work on many projects in various countries around the world, with directors, producers, crews, and challenges that couldn't be more diverse...from the short film "Little Terrorist", shot in the Indian desert with nothing but a good story, a dedicated cast and an old Arriflex running out of sync - the film won several festivals and got nominated for an Oscar, to multiple camera set ups on glaciers, to film the Swiss Air Force in manoeuvres over everlasting snows..
Every new project brings another challenge, but above all, it's the collaborative
process, the bunch of individulas put together to create what sometimes seemes
impossible, that propellent spirit..it's fascinating.
