ALL AT SEA

I have had an interest in sailing and the sea since childhood, and I have been lucky enough to combine this interest with my work as a cinematographer on many occasions.

The Voyage of Charles Darwin
A seven part dramatisation of Darwin's famous voyage in the 'Beagle.' The filming, over a period of 12 months, involved a considerable amount of time filming at sea on the brigantine 'Marquese,' re-rigged as HMS Beagle, and also the recreation of scenes below decks, simulating a ship at sea in the studio. I won a BAFTA award for my work on this series.

Shackleton
A five part dramatisation of Shackleton's famous adventure in the Antarctic. Filming took place over 7 months in the Antarctic in Greenland and at Ealing Studios. Much of the filming took place at sea on the old Baltic trader 'Soren Larsen,' extensively re-rigged and converted into a replica of Shackleton's 'Endurance'. The series also involved a considerable amount of model work, combining models and live action on exterior locations.

Moonfleet
A four part period drama based on Meade-Faulkener's book. Filming included extensive filming in small boats, and also some very ambitious model ship work. A nine-minute scene depicting a square rigged ship wrecked in a storm and combining model work, location work and use of the tank at Ealing studios was particularly successful.

Documentary work
I have worked on many projects involving filming at sea in a huge range of vessels, from warships to small inflatable boats. I have extensive experience of filming in yachts, and have participated twice as a cinematographer/ crewmember in the Fastnet yacht race.

I have my own 34-foot yacht, 'Soldemar,' which I built myself, and sail regularly on both sides of the English Channel.
